Jim Marley Biography
Owner and founder of Do The Sums, Jim Marley has had a varied career over the years from the engineering industry through construction to lecturing. This stood him in good stead to start up his third successful business dothesums.co.uk
He started off his career at A Reyrolle & Co where he was an apprentice, draughtsman and engineer. He then went on to have a varied role at Esso Petroleum starting as a management trainee and then working in marketing and operations.
He wanted to develop the education and training side of his career and worked for the Construction Industry Training Board in training services, specialising in management development.
Jim enjoyed the education side and decided that this was something he wanted to pursue and was recruited as a Senior Lecturer in Business Management and then Principal Lecturer & Director of Marketing at Crawley College of Further Education. Jim has taught on a wide range of courses from undergraduate to MBA, short commercial courses to full-time academic courses at Crawley and Carlisle Colleges of Education,
Over the years Jim has taught a number of subjects including Management Principles, Production, Finance for Managers, Management Accounting, Quantitative Methods, Information Systems and the Technical Aspects of Production, Quality Assurance, and Supervisory Skills.
Jim has also managed to have two successful businesses which he has initiated, developed and owned, they were a restaurant and coffee shop in East Grinstead and a management consultancy in Brighton.
Owning several properties Jim had developed a model to assess the profitability, whether it was a good place to buy and what the return on investment would be. Spotting that there was a gap in the market for this type of tool, he set up dothesums.co.uk.
This business has now evolved to include the appraisal of all types of residential property.
Dothesums.co.uk is a national company providing reports for homebuyers and property investors, which identifies how homes will perform in terms of value over the next five years
His personal business interests include individual manager performance in terms of effectiveness and efficiency, development of enterprise culture in organisations, including small and medium and non-commercial organisations, time management, planning and control.
