Points for Change

I have recently been reviewing how we run the business and revisited one of my favorite writers W Edwards Deming and his fourteen points for sound management.
They fit in well with thoughts for the New Year and the economy and business seemingly, coming out of recession.
Some of these principles are relevant to anyone wanting to develop and run a property portfolio, or even other areas of business.
Create constancy of purpose towards improvement of product and service with the aim of becoming competitive, staying in business and providing jobs.
End the practice of awarding business on price alone. Price, noted Deming, has no meaning without a measure of the quality being purchased.
Improve constantly and forever the system of production and service to improve quality and productivity and thus decrease costs. Management's job surely?
Institute leadership. It means helping people and systems to do a better job, no more, no less.
Eliminate slogans, exhortations and targets for the workforce. Targets are amongst the deadly diseases. What do they accomplish? Nothing but a reduction in performance, because they stifle teamwork, create confrontation and, together with fear, corrupt data.
I am off to collect the mail, if it has arrived?
